A Thousand Yesteryears 2

Childhood Monsters by Mae Clair

Childhood days are filled with fun, a time of delight and discovery. But children also have vivid imaginations for conjuring the denizens of make-believe. Like most otherworldly elements, the fantastical is inhabited with beings of light and dark.

Most of us remember the boogeyman under the bed, a malevolent creature born from the blood of midnight, dust and shadow. When darkness settled the boogeyman left its realm, oozing to life through the floorboards. We knew better than to dangle a hand or foot over the edge of the mattress.

Trying to convince an adult of the boogeyman’s existence was pointless. Once a light switch was activated or a parent peered under the bed to reassure us, the boogeyman seeped back through the floorboards before it could be spied.

In the morning, the touch of sunlight banished all dark creatures to their shadow-draped warrens and we could almost believe the danger would not return. The denizens of the night held no power.

We rode bikes, raced across open fields, picked wild strawberries and climbed trees. When dusk fell, we danced with fireflies, told ghost stories and played hide-and-seek. Twilight was magical, nothing to fear. But darkness eventually settled, and when we crawled into bed at night, fear of the bogeyman returned.

The town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia has a famous bogeyman buried in folklore of the past. The Mothman is a winged humanoid-like creature with glowing red eyes rumored to have haunted the town in 1966 and 1967. In my new mystery/suspense novel, A THOUSAND YESTERYEARS, the Mothman returns fifteen years later. My characters are everyday people forced to face extraordinary circumstances, including secrets, betrayal and murder. Take a look at the blurb:

Behind a legend lies the truth…

As a child, Eve Parrish lost her father and her best friend, Maggie Flynn, in a tragic bridge collapse. Fifteen years later, she returns to Point Pleasant to settle her deceased aunt’s estate. Though much has changed about the once thriving river community, the ghost of tragedy still weighs heavily on the town, as do rumors and sightings of the Mothman, a local legend. When Eve uncovers startling information about her aunt’s death, that legend is in danger of becoming all too real…

Caden Flynn is one of the few lucky survivors of the bridge collapse, but blames himself for coercing his younger sister out that night. He’s carried that guilt for fifteen years, unaware of darker currents haunting the town. It isn’t long before Eve’s arrival unravels an old secret—one that places her and Caden in the crosshairs of a deadly killer…

New York Times bestselling author Kevin O’Brien had this to say about A THOUSAND YESTERYEARS:

“A THOUSAND YESTERYEARS is masterful, bone-chilling fiction that begins with a real-life tragedy on December 15, 1967: the Silver Bridge collapse in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.  46 people died.   Author Mae Clair has seamlessly woven fact, fiction and creepy urban folklore into one intense thriller.  The gripping story focuses on two witnesses to the disaster—fifteen years later.  Both Eve Parrish and Caden Flynn lost loved ones in the catastrophe and still carry the emotional scars.  After a long absence, Eve returns to Point Pleasant to bury her recently-deceased aunt, face some old ghosts, and reunite with her one-time “impossible-crush,” Caden.  But when Eve begins to investigate her aunt’s death, she’s plunged into danger and a nightmare world where scary urban legends are very real.  Full of suspense, A THOUSAND YESTERYEARS will keep you guessing, gasping and turning the pages for more.”

I have a strong passion for myth, urban legends and folktales, although this is the first time I’ve gone to this extent to weave a legend throughout the book (and ultimately the series).

    1. You’re so right, A. M. To this day, I can’t dangle a hand or foot over the side of the bed for more than a few seconds, even though I KNOW there is no bogeyman lurking below 🙂

  8. Oh, that brought back memories of making sure every necessary square inch of body was tightly wrapped up in sheets and blanket!. Not having central heating in those halcyon days of childhood helped in reinforcing the habit of being tightly tucked in – somehow, it never seemed to matter so much in the hot months, but then the sun stayed up later then as well… 🙂
Thanks for having us all over Jennifer 😀
